Social Superheroes
1
Description
Social Superheroes is a dynamic group for children approximately 6 years and older who are ready to deepen their social thinking, peer engagement and self-motivated behaviours. In this group we shift focus from simply reacting in social situations to choosing and sustaining motivated responses.
Children will:
-
recognise what motivates them to connect with others: “I want to help,” “I want to be part of this,” “I want to understand.”
-
practise stepping into social situations with intention and motivation, rather than just waiting for direction.
-
build skills in self-reflection and peer-feedback: “What motivated me to say that?” “What will I try next time so I keep the connection going?”
-
apply social strategies in real-life peer-based contexts, with emphasis on transferring and maintaining motivated behaviours across settings.

2 Routines
Each session is structured to support motivated social thinking and peer connection:
-
Welcome & Check-In – children share: “One thing I felt motivated to try this week” and “One thing I’ll try next time.”
-
Motivation-Driven Social Lesson – short video/presentation plus guided discussion: “What motivated that person to act? What motivated them to respond that way?”
-
Interactive Group Activity – scenario-based role-play or games where children practise motivated responses (e.g., initiating contact, handling peer conflict, asking for help) and reflect on the “why” behind the action.
-
Peer Collaboration Task – pairs or small teams work on a social problem or challenge (e.g., planning a mini-project, navigating a group game, designing a peer-invitation) with focus: “What motivates our group to stay connected? What will we try next time?”
-
Reflection & Transfer Planning – children identify one motivated move they will try outside the group this week (school, playground, home). Teacher prompts: “How will I stay motivated when it gets hard?”
-
Celebration & Wrap – each child receives recognition for a motivated effort (regardless of outcome) and we discuss: “Next time I’ll try…”
[Example Activities]
-
“Motivated Move Board” – children pick a card with a social scenario and plan: “What motivates me to act?” Then role-play the scenario and reflect afterwards.
-
“Team Builder Challenge” – mixed-peer teams construct something (e.g., a mini-project) while facing obstacles; reflection: “What motivated me when we hit a snag? What helped me keep going?”
-
“Superhero Invitation Game” – kids design and send peer-invitations (real or pretend) – prompt: “What motivated you to invite? What will you try next time if they say no?”
-
“Motivation Map Discussion” – charting personal motivations: “I connect when I feel…”; follow-up: “Next time I’ll try…”
-
“Playground Transfer Role-Play” – simulated peer-conflict or play scenario; children practise responses to playground play; wrap with: “What motivated me to say that? What will I try next time at recess?”
✅ Is This the Right Group for Your Child?
Q: My child understands basic social rules but often struggles to stay motivated or engaged with peers. Will this program help?
A: Definitely. Social Superheroes focuses precisely on helping children move from knowing what to do to wanting to do it, even when it’s tricky or tiring. We support motivation, persistence and peer-initiative.
Q: My child is verbal and cooperative but rarely takes the lead or connects with new peers.
A: That’s exactly the kind of challenge this group targets. We encourage children to take initiative, be curious about others, ask for connection and reflect on their own motivation to engage.
Q: What kind of child is this group best for?
-
Children aged approx. 6 years and older
-
Are ready for more complex peer-interaction, self-reflection and group work
-
May navigate social rules but struggle with initiation, persistence, or transferring skills to the playground/school
-
Would benefit from an environment with peers, guided reflection, choice, and emphasis on motivation, effort and connection
