Kiddo Steps

Description

Kiddo Steps is a specially crafted group for children aged 6 to 8 who are ready to ignite their motivation to grow socially and cognitively.

In this group we focus on helping each child:

  • Understand how to read the different social contexts

  • Understand others’ different emotions and learn that it’s okay to feel all the different feelings (including the “bad” ones like anger and frustration),

And based on this,

  • Understand how to solve the social problems

  • Understand how to show socially-appropriate behaviours

We support children who are verbal and ready to take the next step — not those already excelling in social nuance — helping them learn to think outside the box, interact with peers and understand different emotions.

      Routines

Each session follows a dynamic and motivating structure:

  • Welcome & Free play – As we wait for everyone to arrive at the centre, the children are given some time to settle in with free play, where they can play alone or with peers.

  • Circle time – We discuss what we did throughout the week and get a soft start! We learn and review the important tools needed for reading the social rooms! We are proud to call it “SOCIAL INFERENCING’ curriculum developed by WYABA.

  • Social Detectives – We all explore together to read the different social situations by using the social glasses.

  • Group Activity – Get together! Let’s break the escape rooms/board games/cooperative activities to help our social brains take another KIDDO STEPS!

  • Brain Teaser!!! – We introduce different learning/discussing activities to practice flexible thinking for our learners through mind-map game, role-playing, riddles, etc.

  • Wrap-Up & Reflect – Each child takes turns talking about what we learned in the group, and shares what they enjoyed the most during that session.

[Example Activities]

  • Mind map game - children are given one object, for example an apple, and they are asked “What can we do with an apple?”. (Possible responses: “we can eat it, chew it, wash it, cut it, etc.). Children are encouraged to think outside the box and provide answers which are possible, but may not seem correct at first. For example, when talking about an apple, children may say “we can eat it” or “we can wash it”, but they are also encouraged to provide answers like “we can draw on it, sit on it, play with it”, as these actions are possible as well.

  • Riddles - riddles are great practices for our learners to actively skim through the knowledge that we already know! Both being a questioner and answer-er keep everyone busy to track the information identified, and can learn how to think outside of one’s expectation :-)

✅ Is This the Right Group for Your Child?

Q: My child is verbal but often misreads social situations. Will this help?
A: Yes—because the group also focuses on social inference skills which includes how to read the different social situations, and identifying emotions that we feel and others may feel, and how we can respond to them using various strategies.

Q: My child has difficulty thinking of more than one way to do something. Is that addressed here?
A: Absolutely—our flexible thinking games provide children with the opportunity to practice these skills in an engaging way, and are supported through indirect verbal prompts like “what about ___?” Or “do you think it could be ___ or ___?” when they are unable to respond independently.

Q: What kind of child is this group best for?

  • Children aged 6 to 8 years old

  • Are verbal, but may have language or cognitive delays

  • Struggle with reading social cues, solving peer problems, or adapting to change

  • Would benefit from a group environment that emphasizes motivation, active engagement, and repeated practice, rather than purely independent work

Enjoy learning in a playful, structured, encouraging small-group format
