New study shows people with ASD are very creative

Updated: Oct 17, 2025

A new study found that people with ASD can be very creative and talented. They often come up with original and different ideas, even though some things in life, like talking to people or getting a job, can be harder for them.

Dr. Catherine from the University of Stirling said this might be because autistic people think about problems in a different way, such as noticing small details others miss or coming up with ideas no one else thinks of. The study looked at 312 people and showed that autism can sometimes be a strength, not just a challenge.

Actors and advocates are happy about the news as well. Cian Binchy, who has a learning disability, said it’s hard for people with learning disabilities to get into creative jobs because they need extra support. It is not because they aren’t talented. Actress Daryl Hannah, who is a famous actress, also shared that she has autism. It resulted in helping more people to understand autism.

Groups like “Access All Areas” and “Ambitious about Autism" say this study proves that people with autism can be very creative in art, music, film, and photography. But many still struggle to get jobs; only 15% of autistic people in the UK have full time work, even though most want to work.

This study is more than just interesting, it can actually help autistic people. Knowing they are creative can boost confidence, open up more opportunities in school or jobs, and challenge wrong ideas that autism is only a limitation. It also encourages schools, employers, and governments to provide more support so autistic people can use their talents and succeed.

The key take away is autism isn’t just about having problems. Thinking differently can be a big advantage. With the right support, people with autism can succeed in creative jobs, show the world their talents, and feel proud of themselves.
